I can’t believe it’s been a year since my monthly posting here began. I looked back and realized there was one topic I haven’t touched on yet…age difference.
Before we got married a couple people confessed they had concerns about us lasting because of our age difference. I’m ten years and a couple months younger than my husband. Although not by much, we’re even in different generations. I’m a typical Gen X’er who still gets lost in Little House on the Prairie and my husband is a Boomer who says Michael Landon only had one show to watch and that is Bonanza.
When people ask us about the age difference thankfully what we have in common is so much more than what keeps us apart. Even in the Zest area we’re in the same place but that wasn’t always the case. When we first married he was past the peak and I wasn’t even 30. Whether it was trying to balance drives, decide on Michael Landon’s best TV show (Little House, I’m telling you! ) or choosing a radio station on a long drive God gave me a Rocky answer on how to handle the age difference.
Rocky, as in Rocky the movie. The movie my husband probably saw as a teenager in the theater and I saw years later on cable. The quotable movie where Rocky calls for his wife, “Adrian!” and all these years later movie fans still imitate. Yep, that movie is what God uses to remind me He put us together for a reason and knew even before either of us were born that we would marry with a ten year age difference.
What is it about Rocky? The gaps.

If you remember the movie Rocky and Adrian don’t have a lot but love in common. She’s a shy bookworm type and he couldn’t be more typecast as a jock if he tried. Someone asked Rocky how is it they work so well. His answer is our answer:
Gaps. “I got gaps and Adrian’s got gaps. But together, we ain’t got no gaps.”
One of my favorite quotes is by the late Larry Burkette and he said “If you both have everything in common one of you is unnecessary.” Having a ten year gap does bring about interesting discussions and I believe it’s a choice if we want those differences to bring us closer together or drive us apart. I like the gaps. Because as Rocky said, together, we ain’t got no gaps.”
Are you in a marriage with an age difference? Do you notice together there are no gaps?

3 Zesters spoke up:
Great post, Julie :) Hubby and I are only 12 days apart - but we STILL fill in the gaps (just not in that particular area!).
We are eight years and three months apart. We have gaps too, but what we have in common--both born outside the US or Canada, and living first together (married) in the US and then in Canada, with an international background and interests- makes up for the gaps.
While I don't like the thought of him getting older before me, I didn't have a lot in common with men my own age when I met him, and I am so glad God brought us together!
Thanks ladies for reading. I agree Karen, I never connected with anyone my age. God knew what He was doing!
